Nordic skiing
Présentation
The Jura Mountain range, due to its isolation and harshness in the past, led the people who lived in the mountains to travel on skis during the winter months. It was thus the best way to cross valleys and plateaus easily. This tradition went on, making this sport of Scandinavian origin one of the main winter leisure activities in the region, whose hilly terrain lends itself particularly well to this practice. Take time to connect with nature and discover the enchanting landscapes of the Haut-Doubs on one of the 32 Nordic ski loops to be taken either with family, friends or on your own!
More than 500 kilometres (310 miles) of Nordic ski trails marked with the Nordic France label are available in the Haut-Doubs for skiers of all levels. From a loop between two villages to a bigger one in the middle of the countryside, including a stage on the Grande Traversée du Jura skiing route, the choice is yours! Moreover, trails in the region are suitable for both Nordic and skating skiing, what's more by day and night thanks to some illuminated trails.
Between Mouthe and Chapelle-des-Bois, the Pré Poncet is one of the snowiest and most important Nordic sites in the Haut-Doubs. 185 kilometres (115 miles) of trails in this area will satisfy both beginners and skilled skiers with numerous difficulty levels ranging from green to black. What could be more beautiful and magical than a mountain landscape under the snow?
This remarkable place is not only known by the locals, and for good reason: it hosts the Transjurassienne, an internationally recognised long-distance ski race which brings together nearly 4,000 skiers on routes ranging from 20 to 68 kilometres (12-42 miles). The Chaux-Neuve Nordic stadium and its famous ski jump also hosts a world-class competition: it is the venue for several events of the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup. This area in the Jura Mountains attracts indeed the crème de la crème of Nordic skiers! It also brings together each year no less than 15,000 spectators coming to watch the race and encourage participants. Supporters cheering runners, refuelling along the tracks and human warmth around the villages give these events a unique and heart-warming atmosphere.
Snowshoe lovers will not be left out either! Put on your snowshoes and go at your own pace along 50 kilometres (31 miles) of marked trails that are waiting for you in the Haut-Doubs. To go off the beaten track, let yourself be guided by professionals: they will help you discover another facet of the Jura Mountains. All means are good to catch a glimpse of the region: let yourself be tempted by Nordic or backcountry skiing, a practice which is particularly well adapted to the gentle relief of the Haut-Doubs. Why not also try biathlon, a ride with a dog sled or even with our Comtois horses?
